Program: Emergency Services Shelter
Licensed by the Iowa Department of Human Services, the Francis Lauer Emergency Services Shelter provides short-term care for youth requiring out-of-home treatment, as well as respite care in situations involving:
- Physical health and safety concerns
- Delinquent behaviors
- Runaway behaviors
- Truancy
- Homelessness
- Mental health struggles
- Difficulties at home or school
Services:
In addition to the shelter beds, the staff of Francis Lauer’s crisis response unit works with providers (e.g. Juvenile Court Services, Department of Human Services) and families to address a crisis without requiring out-of-home placement for the youth.
Once referred, a youth quickly receives services, which could include:
- Risk/safety assessment (by phone or in-person)
- Meeting with the family (in their home or at Francis Lauer)
- Helping the family and child de-escalate during a stressful situation
- Developing a safety plan
- Looking for alternatives for emergency shelter placement
- Assisting with referrals and resources
- Coordinating with other providers and agencies
- Planning for discharge (if the youth is admitted to Francis Lauer)
- Following up with the family to ensure continued success
Eligibility:
Services are available for youth who:
- Have run away or are homeless
- Need help resolving family conflicts
- Have been abused or neglected
- Are adjudicated and waiting for court action
