Licensed by the Iowa Department of Human Services, the Francis Lauer Emergency Services Shelter provides short-term care for youth requiring out-of-home treatment, as well as respite care in situations involving:

  • Physical health and safety concerns
  • Delinquent behaviors
  • Runaway behaviors
  • Truancy
  • Homelessness
  • Mental health struggles
  • Difficulties at home or school

Services:

In addition to the shelter beds, the staff of Francis Lauer’s crisis response unit works with providers (e.g. Juvenile Court Services, Department of Human Services) and families to address a crisis without requiring out-of-home placement for the youth.

Once referred, a youth quickly receives services, which could include:

  • Risk/safety assessment (by phone or in-person)
  • Meeting with the family (in their home or at Francis Lauer)
  • Helping the family and child de-escalate during a stressful situation
  • Developing a safety plan
  • Looking for alternatives for emergency shelter placement
  • Assisting with referrals and resources
  • Coordinating with other providers and agencies
  • Planning for discharge (if the youth is admitted to Francis Lauer)
  • Following up with the family to ensure continued success

Eligibility:

Services are available for youth who:

  • Have run away or are homeless
  • Need help resolving family conflicts
