Behavioral Health Intervention Services (BHIS) are supportive, directive, and teaching interventions provided in a community- or home-based care environment designed to improve the individual’s skills for effective functioning with family, peers, and community in an age-appropriate manner.

Your child or young adult may benefit from BHIS services for issues such as:

  • family, school or peer conflict
  • change in sleep or eating patterns
  • loss of planning and organizational skills
  • impulsive behaviors such as running away, substance use, verbally and/or physically acting out
  • risk of out-of-home placement

Services:

  • Crisis intervention

Eligibility:

BHIS serves individuals, aged 4 to 20, with Title XIX benefits through Medicaid. To participate in BHIS, an individual must secure a clinical diagnostic assessment with a licensed practitioner.

The Psychiatric Medical Institute for Children (PMIC) is designed especially for children who present serious emotional and behavioral problems. The basic foundation of this program is designed to develop positive self-concepts, social, and problem-solving skills while integrating child and family treatment components.

The PMIC system is intended to serve children who need an intensive treatment program for an extended period of time. Each of the facilities in Iowa determines its own criteria for eligibility, service descriptions, and direct-care provider requirements.

Beloit offers a PMIC program as well as an Enhanced PMIC program. The PMIC program serves children who display inappropriate behaviors, have difficulty with social skills, or are unable to enjoy daily life due to mental illness. The Enhanced PMIC program offers services for youth who struggle with lower intellectual functioning, developmental delays, or other disorders or inappropriate behaviors.

Eligibility:

Psychiatric Medical Institute for Children:

  • Children can be between the ages of 5 and 15
  • Families must have a ‘Certificate of Need’ signed by the child’s psychiatrist and therapist
  • A child must have a letter written by his or her therapist, detailing the services they have received through therapy
  • A child must have pre-authorization from the family’s Managed Care Organization (MCO) insurance

Enhanced PMIC:

  • Children are recommended to be between the ages of 12 and 18
  • Children will have an IQ of between 60 and 75

Residential Treatment is a structured rehabilitative environment that provides psychiatric treatment through individualized plans to help children and teens who have severe emotional and behavioral disorders. A specialized treatment team provide mental health services that help kids heal and lead safe, healthy lives.
