Program: Head Start
As the nation’s leading federally funded early learning program, Head Start serves children and families in every state. Head Start’s role in each state differs based on local systems and models.The purpose of Head Start programs is to promote the school readiness of children ages 3 to 5 years. Most of these programs are based in centers. In other programs, children and families may receive services from educators and family service staff who regularly make home visits. Parent involvement is encouraged and support is offered for children with disabilities.

Eligibility:
Head Start is accessible at no cost to children ages 3 – 5 for low-income families. Families and children experiencing homelessness, and children in the foster care system are also eligible as well as children with disabilities and special needs. Specific eligibility requirements are determined by each Head Start site.

- proof of family income (for 1 year)
- child's birth verification
- record of recent physical exam for the child
- record of the child's lead test,
- the child's immunization card
- record of recent dental exam for the child.

Program: Healthy Child Care Iowa (HCCI)
Healthy Child Care Iowa supports registered nurse child care health consultants (CCHC) throughout Iowa. The child care nurse consultants provide on-site consultations, technical assistance, and training to child care providers. Businesses may call or send questions to a child care nurse consultant about health and safety policies, health programs, health of personnel, and specific child health or safety issues.
There is also a toll-free talkline available to child care providers and families for health related questions and to be connected to a child care nurse consultant. The Healthy Families Hotline number is 1.800.369.2229. Multiple language interpretation is available.
Services:
- Assessment of the child care environment for health and safety policy and practices
- Review of child health portion of enrollment record for health status of child, and identify overall health and safety needs of the whole group of children enrolled in child care
- Program planning with child care providers to meet the National Health and Safety Standards for Out-of-Home child care
- Issues specific consultation for identification of health and safety needs
- Technical assistance for specific problems or need areas
- Training of child care providers on health and safety issues
- Assist child care providers in drafting policy or procedures pertaining to health and safety
- Audit of immunization records, incident reports, etc.
Services are provided in licensed child care centers, registered child development homes, preschools, Head Start or Early Head Start, and non-registered child care homes.

Services are available to all Iowa child care providers and families.

Program: I-Smile
I-Smile⢠Dental Home Initiative is a statewide program that connects Iowans with dental, medical, and community resources to ensure a lifetime of health and wellness.An I-Smile Coordinator provides care coordination and support to families with children who need dental care. The I-Smile Coordinator can help with: Setting up dental appointments, providing reminders of when the dental appointment is, arranging for transportation to the dental appointment, and providing education on oral health care.

- Oral screenings
- Fluoride varnish applications
- Sealant applications
- Prophylaxes
- Radiographs
- Educate parents about the benefits of regular preventive dental care
- Provide families with the names and locations of dental providers
- Assist families with scheduling dental appointments
- Arrange dental support services, such as transportation and translation
