A cooperative effort with volunteer lawyers and social service providers to provide civil legal assistance to eligible Polk County residents. The program works in the following ways:

  • Attorneys work in coordination with Iowa Legal Aid and the Drake Legal Clinic to provide assistance to victims of domestic violence who are unable to represent themselves due to special circumstances such as extreme abuse, illiteracy, or language barriers.
  • Volunteer attorneys conduct new case screenings at local homeless shelters. Clients receive advice regarding civil legal matters and appropriate referrals if additional services are required. Many of the clients served through the homeless outreach project cannot be reached through more traditional avenues of service.
  • The PCBA VLP hosts a monthly multidisciplinary clinic to provide assistance to Hispanic families. Volunteer attorneys paired with certified interpreters conduct interviews and provide legal advice to individuals attending the clinics. Clients with legal issues that cannot be resolved at the clinic are referred to volunteer attorneys for further representation.
