Program: Education Center

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul offers adult education and employment support services through their Tom Varilek Education Center. They serve adult students who need to improve their basic reading, writing, and comprehension skills, as well as individuals who wish to take their High School Equivalency exam. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul helps to prepare individuals for future careers and to connect individuals to employment services.

HiSET:
The Tom Varilek Education Center at St. Vincent de Paul has partnered with Des Moines Area Community College to offer a HiSET preparation course. The course is available to anyone 17 years or older who is not enrolled in high school. This is a course that can get students ready before they continue on to the Des Moines Area Community College, to begin the HiSET class. St. Vincent de Paul offers one on one tutoring to all of their students. Child care is provided on site at no charge during the class by the Mercy College of Health and Sciences. The HiSET test has taken the place of the GED test, but also consists of a series of five tests covering writing, science, math, reading and social studies.

The financial assistance program provides assistance to households that are experiencing an emergency or hardship and that need short term financial help. Funding is limited.

A Des Moines Area Religious Council (DMARC) food pantry. Individuals and families may receive an emergency food box once every month from any DMARC food pantry site.
