Classes are staffed by trained facilitators who have education and/or backgrounds in family support and family systems. All programs include oversight by management staff and complete all necessary legal documentation for Court proceedings. Pre and post tests are administered for Outcome and Evaluation purposes and to measure level of learning attainment.

Services:

  • The Parenting Way™ Parent Education Classes ‘ a ten week curriculum-based course that is open to any parent, grandparent or guardian. This class receives referrals from the Department of Human Services, Juvenile Court, Family Court, Community-based agencies and individual self referrals. It was developed in conjunction with the United Way of Central Iowa and has been evaluated using Results Based Accountability scoring. Cost for classes is $100.00 for all ten. If you pay for all ten classes in advance, the fee will be discounted to $75.00. If you do not pay in advance, but attend all ten classes, the last class fee will be waived.
  • Child Sexual Abuse Prevention and Darkness to Light Stewards of Children® Training and Presentations brings experts and community members together to recognize Child Sexual Abuse indicators before abuse occurs and emphasizes the importance of learning and working together to promote change. Most important is the programs ability to train parents in how to listen, observe and take action before a child is sexually abused. Stewards of Children® is an evidence-informed prevention solution that increases knowledge, improves attitudes, and changes child protective behaviors. T
  • Children in Between ‘ a four hour class using Putting Children First, Proven Parenting Strategies for Helping Children Thrive Through Divorce. A $40 fee is charged only for this class
  • Family Support Groups

Hours:

Parenting Way Classes are held: on Tuesday & Thursday evenings from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm at Urbandale United Church of Christ at 3530 70th Street Urbandale Room 203.
Family support groups are held on Mondays from 6:00 pm – 7:30pm at Grace United Methodist Church, 3700 Cottage Grove, Des Moines.

Parents Anonymous® Community-Based Family Support is an ongoing Child Abuse Prevention program with a focus on parent group support, youth and children social and emotional group support and resources. The program is parent-driven, includes a Parent Leadership component and is facilitated by trained staff. Parents can join a Parents Anonymous® Group at any time and attend for as long as they wish.

Services:

  • Parents are welcomed to the Parents Anonymous® Group and receive information about how the group operates
  • Parents are invited to share responsibility for planning and operating the Parents Anonymous® Group
  • Parents talk and problem-solve with other parents about parenting issues and challenges
  • Parents determine their own goals and timelines
  • Parents receive a variety of Parents Anonymous® program materials such as the I am a Parents Anonymous® Parent along with newsletters such as The Parent Networker, which features stories written by parents for parents
  • Parents give and receive support from other parents during and after meetings
  • Parents expand their network of support with others to help reduce stress and isolation
  • Parents learn about community resources and how to link to them
  • Parents have the opportunity to take on meaningful leadership roles in their family, the Parents Anonymous® Group and their community.

Eligibility:

Parents Anonymous® Groups welcome any parent or individual in a parenting role seeking support and positive parenting strategies regardless of the age or special challenges of their children. Parents may be married, divorced, single, grandparents, stepparents, foster parents, teen parents, or even aunts and uncles. Parents at risk or involved with Child Protective Services, domestic violence, homeless shelters, correctional and/or substance abuse programs also attend.

Parents Anonymous® Groups are held on Monday evenings at Grace United Methodist Church, 3700 Cottage Grove, Des Moines, IA; Fort Des Moines Open Bible Church , 1116 Army Post Rd. on Monday afternoons, Wednesday evenings at 1211 Vine Street West Des Moines and Boone Open Bible Church 1224 Hancock Drive, Boone Iowa Thursday evenings. The Four Oaks Parents as Teachers program is a free, voluntary, family education and support program designed to provide practical, timely information on child development to families. It provides information, support and encouragement parents need to help their children develop optimally during the crucial early years of life.
