Dallas County Community Services – General Relief

General Relief provides temporary assistance with basic and special needs. The program serves individuals and families who are at risk due to a temporary crisis and/or a mental or physical disability.

Typically the program may only be used once per calendar year. If already used within the year, an individual can obtain a Notice of Decision declination letter from General Relief and a list of community resources which may be able to assist with the individual’s need.

The Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) is offered through the Healthy and Well Kids in Iowa program, also known as Hawki. Iowa offers Hawki health coverage for uninsured children of working families.

No family pays more than $40 a month. Some families pay nothing at all. A child who qualifies for Hawki health insurance will get their health coverage through a Managed Care Organization (MCO).

Dental benefits for Hawki are covered by Delta Dental of Iowa.

Eligibility:

Below are some of the eligibility requirements to determine if a child qualifies for the Hawki program:

  • A resident of the state of Iowa
  • Under 19 years of age
  • Have no other health insurance
  • A citizen of the United States or a qualified alien
  • Be in a family that meets the Hawki income limits (Check your family’s income in the Hawki Income Guidelines table to see if your children qualify for Hawki)
  • Not a dependent of a State of Iowa employee
  • Not currently covered under the Medicaid program
