Early Periodic Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment (EPSDT) is a program for Iowa children to get preventive health care services including oral health services. Iowa Care for Kids helps families access regular checkups and health care for children to support their growth, development, and well-being.

- Immunizations (shots) like measles and mumps
- Regular vision checkups, and glasses
- Regular hearing checkups, and hearing aids

Eligibility:
If your child has Iowa Medicaid and is younger than age 21, Iowa Care for Kids is included in their Medicaid benefits. Iowa Care for Kids is not included for children who have Healthy and Well Kids in Iowa health insurance (sometimes called Hawki).
Intake Process:
Parents or guardians should contact their local DHS office to enroll in Medicaid. This automatically enrolls the child in the EPSDT program. Families can contact their local EPSDT program for referrals to Medicaid covered services.

Iowa HHS leads efforts in Iowa to prevent lead poisoning in children below the age of 6 through the Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program (CLPPP). This program oversees blood lead testing of children, case management services when children are identified as lead-poisoned, and conducts education and outreach services regarding childhood lead poisoning.

Program: I-Smile
I-Smile™ Dental Home Initiative is a statewide program that connects Iowans with dental, medical, and community resources to ensure a lifetime of health and wellness. An I-Smile Coordinator provides care coordination and support to families with children who need dental care. The I-Smile Coordinator can help with: Setting up dental appointments, providing reminders of when the dental appointment is, arranging for transportation to the dental appointment, and providing education on oral health care.

- Educate parents about the benefits of regular preventive dental care

Program: 1st Five
Iowa’s 1st Five – Healthy Mental Development Initiative builds partnerships between medical providers and public service providers to enhance high quality well-child care. Medical providers make a referral to 1st Five and a developmental support specialist contacts the family to discuss the family’s concerns. 1st Five developmental support specialists provide resources and referrals to help meet the needs of the family.

- Developmental screens
- Mental health or behavioral therapy referrals
- Child development information/education
- Community resource referrals/information
- Financial resources
- Connection to resources to meet individualized family needs or concerns

The Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) is offered through the Healthy and Well Kids in Iowa program, also known as Hawki. Iowa offers Hawki health coverage for uninsured children of working families.
No family pays more than $40 a month. Some families pay nothing at all. A child who qualifies for Hawki health insurance will get their health coverage through a Managed Care Organization (MCO).

- Be in a family that meets the Hawki income limits (Check your family’s income in the Hawki Income Guidelines table to see if your children qualify for Hawki)
- Not a dependent of a State of Iowa employee
- Not currently covered under the Medicaid program

Program: Healthy Child Care Iowa (HCCI)
Healthy Child Care Iowa supports local Maternal and Child Health agencies to define the role and responsibilities of the Child Care Nurse Consultant. CCNCs work with Iowa Early Care and Education programs to provide free services. The CCNC program is evidence-based and helps to ensure that children have access to healthy and safe care. CCNC’s are required to complete the Iowa Training Project for Child Care Nurse Consultants (ITPCCNC) training. The purpose of ITPCCNC is to expand the nurse’s knowledge and skills to work with early childhood care and education providers.
