The Public Housing program consists of rental units, within the City of Des Moines, owned and managed by the Department of Housing Services.  Upon acceptance of a unit, participants enter into a lease agreement with the Department of Housing Services and pay approximately 30% of their monthly adjusted income for rent.

Eligibility:

  • One member of the household must be a U.S. citizen or non-citizen with eligible status
  • Applicants for the Public Housing Program must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must meet income eligibility requirements as established by HUD (80% median family income)
  • Applicants with any drug-related charge in the past five years will be denied

Intake Process:

Pre-applications and applications available and accepted at the DMMHA office. Applications to be placed on the waitlist only accepted during a time the waitlist is open.  Waitlist information located on website.

The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program provides rental assistance to low-income families and individuals who are elderly or disabled. Participants in the Section 8 program pay 30-40% of their monthly adjusted income for rent.

Eligible applicants for Section 8 program are given a Housing Choice Voucher and 60 days to find an approved rental unit. The Section 8 program provides rental assistance to participants who want to rent from a private landlord. Participants may choose the type of housing they wish to rent. Prior to being placed under the program and at least annually thereafter each unit must pass a Housing Quality Standards inspection to ensure that the unit is a safe and decent place to live.

Eligibility:

Eligibility for the Section 8 is determined by family composition, arrest history, past participation in federally subsidized programs, rental history, and income guidelines determined by HUD for Des Moines.

Additional eligibility requirements follow:
• One member of the household must be a U.S. citizen or non-citizen with eligible status
• Must meet income eligibility requirements as established by HUD (50% Median Family Income)
• Applicants having any drug related charge within the past two years will be denied

Intake Process:

In order to receive Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program assistance, you must apply during a time period the waiting list is open. Waiting list information can be found on the website.

Section 8 vouchers will be issued to applicants on the waiting list as the vouchers become available by participants leaving the Section 8 Program.
