Healthy Opportunities for Parents to Experience Success (HOPES) is a voluntary community based home visitation program for families living in Humboldt County. The program goals are to promote child health and development, improve family relationships, promote positive parenting and family interaction, prevent child abuse and neglect, as well as infant mortality and morbidity.
The Humboldt County HOPES program is funded by Building Families Early Childhood Area.
Services:
- Advocate for and link families to appropriate community services.
- Teach, demonstrate and coach parents on how to care for their child.
- Promote nurturing parent – child interaction.
- Teach and model appropriate parent behavior and methods of discipline.
- Provide prenatal information and support.
Eligibility:
Humboldt County residents who are expecting a child, or have a child between the ages of birth – 3 years.

Program: Public Health Nursing
Public Health nurses provides skilled nursing care, information on healthy lifestyle practices, and encourages changes for better health. This service is available to every citizen (of all ages) and is provided locally in every county. Skilled nursing services are provided by professional staff or associated paraprofessionals. The service available varies by county. Public Health Nurses also provide information and assistance to link families with local community resources for health and social needs.

- Pediatric home care
- Immunizations (direct or referral)
- Physical, occupational, and speech therapies
- Health teaching
- Nutrition counseling and teaching
- Initial newborn visit
- Family support home visiting

WIC is a special supplemental nutrition program for women, infants, and children. WIC is a federally funded public health nutrition program helping families by providing healthy foods, nutrition education, and referrals to other health care agencies.
Services:
- Supplemental food benefits for grocery stores and some farmer's markets
- Nutrition counseling and education
- Breastfeeding education, promotion, breast pumps, and support
- Immunization screening and referrals
- Health and social service referrals
Eligibility:
WIC serves women, infants, and children that meet income based guidelines.
