This is a Des Moines Area Religious Council (DMARC) food panty. People seeking assistance can visit one of the DMARC food pantries to receive a three-day supply of food once per month. DMARC also operates a mobile food pantry at sites across the Des Moines metro. Pantry open hours vary. Please visit dmarcunited.org/food/pantry-locations for the most up-to-date schedules.

Intake Process:

Provide a photo ID for the head of household and other identification for every member of the family. Some pantries may request a current piece of mail which includes your name and primary address.

 

The DMARC Food Pantry Network offers a food pantry delivery service in the Greater Des Moines area. If a person is unable to obtain food by either visiting a food pantry location or by using a proxy to pick up food for them, they may call to request a delivery. DMARC asks that only those with health, transportation, or other mitigating circumstances use this service. Call 1-833-DMARC-20 (1-833-362-7220) toll-free to request a delivery between 9:00 am and 12:00 noon, Monday – Friday. Requests for delivery are taken on a first-come first-serve basis. Food will be delivered to the person’s doorstep with a no-contact drop-off the following business day between 9:00 am and 12:00 noon.

IMPACT Community Action Partnership provides a number of programs designed to help families stay warm in the winter, cool in the summer, and maintain access to water. Clients can receive a one-time payment for a utility bill if income guidelines are met. IMPACT will help clients apply for the benefit through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). Applications for the LIHEAP program are accepted November 1st – April 30th.

IMPACT also partners with Polk County Public Works and Mid-Iowa Community Action to provide Weatherization services to all of their service counties.
Weatherization is a program established to help reduce the heating and cooling costs for low-income persons, particularly the elderly, disabled, and children, by improving the energy efficiency of their homes, thereby reducing the household’s energy bills.

Apply for energy assistance by the following methods:​

  • Phone appointment: Call your local IMPACT office or reach out to IMPACT staff on the chat on the website to schedule a phone appointment for Utility Assistance.

  • Apply for weatherization by phone.

This program is designed to provide hygiene and household cleaning items, such as shampoo, soap, feminine hygiene products, detergent and more. Item availability varies. Personal hygiene packages can be picked up at our Ankeny, Boone and Drake locations or delivered (Polk County only).

Alternatively, families may opt to receive a Dollar Tree gift card for the purchase of personal hygiene and household cleaning items. Gift cards are distributed with a monthly food pantry order or mailed out.

Those in need of the Personal Pantry items must call 515-518-4770 prior to visiting an office in person.

Eligibility:

Households must be at or below 175% of the Federal Poverty Level. Households may access this service once every three months.

Intake Process:

Contact IMPACT at 515-518-4770 to place an order. Proof of the last 30 days of income or the previous year’s income must be provided once a year.

Families will have two options for collecting their personal pantry order:

  • Pick-Up: Families can collect their Personal Packages at the Ankeny, Boone and Drake Neighborhood food pantries.
  • Delivery: Families living in Polk County can also choose to have their personal pantry package delivered to their home. Personal pantry packages will be delivered at least one day after the completion of the intake process with our staff.

Seniors are able to receive fresh, nutritious, locally grown fruits, vegetables, honey and herbs from farmers’ markets and roadside stands. This program not only helps seniors, but also helps develop new and additional farmers’ markets, roadside stands and community supported agriculture programs.

  • Each eligible individual receives 10 – $5 checks or $50 in benefits.

  • The checks can be used to purchase fresh, nutritious, unprepared fruits, vegetables, herbs and honey.

  • Each person can receive SFMNP once per year.

  • Checks can be used between June 1st and October 31st.

    • $26,973 if single

    • $36,483 if a married couple

Program: Nature Pass

Nature Pass is a recreational discount program for families to receive 50% off activities and rentals at the Polk County Conservation Parks. With this card, families can receive discounts on camping, cabins, equipment rentals, program registration, equestrian programs, etc.

Program: RAYS

RAYS is a scholarship program for eligible youth to help cover costs for a multitude of activities including but not limited to: sports registration, band, dance, and other recreational programs. The RAYS scholarship can provide up to $100 per individual, and has a limit of $200 per household. Funding availability varies.

Eligibility:

Child under the age of 18 and who lives in Boone, Jasper, Marion, Polk, or Warren counties. Household income must be at or below 200% federal poverty level.

Program: Thrive

Thrive is a basic needs assistance program funded by several churches in Polk County for residents of Polk County that do not live in Des Moines. The Thrive Program can provide up to $250 per year for basic needs assistance.  This assistance can be provided up to $250 per household per fiscal year (October–September).  Funding availability varies.

Residents of Polk County (excluding Des Moines) who have a household income at or below 200% federal poverty level.
