Legal Aid Society of Story County is a non-profit corporation, formed in 1974 to provide legal assistance in civil matters to families who cannot afford to hire an attorney in private practice.


Legal Aid of Story County works with individuals in the areas including, but not limited to:

  • Civil Protective Orders (for Domestic, Sexual or Elder Abuse)
  • Dissolution of Marriage
  • Child Custody
  • Child Support
  • Visitation
  • Will
  • Power of Attorney
  • Paternity
  • Guardianship
  • Conservatorship
  • Debtor/Creditor
  • Landlord/Tenant
  • Unemployment Benefits Appeal
  • Social Security Appeal

Legal Aid of Story County does not provide legal representation in criminal matters, driving violations, juvenile matters, or cases that could generate a fee for a private attorney.


Basic eligibility guidelines requirements are:

  • Must be a resident of Story County, Iowa
  • Have income at or below 150% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines
  • Have the type of civil case handled by the Legal Aid Society of Story County
  • Must not present a conflict to the office

    • Monday – Friday 9:00 am – 11:00 am or 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm, except Thursday afternoon
