Hemoglobinopathy Screening and Prevention Care Program

Newborn screening for sickle cell anemia and other hemoglobin disorders is mandatory in Iowa. The Iowa Newborn Metabolic Screening program provides newborn screening services for the state. The Hemoglobinopathy Comprehensive Care Program offers education and treatment for babies identified through newborn screening and other individuals with known or suspected sickle cell disorders, thalassemia, or other hemoglobinopathies. The program works with the family and their local physician. Staff of the Hemoglobinopathy Program are available, on request, to assist with in services and/or community education activities related to blood disorders.
