Iowa’s 1st Five – Healthy Mental Development Initiative builds partnerships between medical providers and public service providers to enhance high quality well-child care. Medical providers make a referral to 1st Five and a developmental support specialist contacts the family to discuss the family’s concerns. 1st Five developmental support specialists provide resources and referrals to help meet the needs of the family.

  • Supporting the population of children birth to age five (up to a child’s fifth birthday).
  • Increasing use of surveillance and standardized developmental screening by partnering with (engaging) primary care providers.

Child development program that serves children from birth to age 5, pregnant women and their families. Child-focused programs to increase school readiness of young children in low-income families.

Early Head Start programs promote children’s physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development, support parents’ efforts to fulfill their parental roles, and help parents move toward self-sufficiency.

The purpose of Head Start programs is to promote the school readiness of children ages 3 to 5 years. Most of these programs are based in centers. In other programs, children and families may receive services from educators and family service staff who regularly make home visits. Parent involvement is encouraged and support is offered for children with disabilities.

NISSA African Family Services seeks to end domestic violence and sexual assault in African Immigrants and Refugee communities. NISAA functions as a resource advocate and support for the African communities in Iowa
affected by domestic violence and sexual assault by providing crisis advocacy,
individual and group counseling, legal advocacy, housing and employment assistance,
and many other direct support services.

Nest

The nest program is an incentive-based program for income eligible pregnant women, post -partum mothers and their children up to 4 years of age. Participants who are pregnant and/or have children under 13 months can earn incentive points for healthy behaviors such as keeping doctor appointments and attending parent points by attending Nest parent education classes. The points are then redeemed for incentive items ranging from diapers, wipes bathing supplies, baby clothes, car seats and educational books.

Residents of Black Hawk County with income below 185% of the federal poverty level.

Polk County Health Department creates the conditions for all people to live healthy lives by engaging residents, reducing health disparities and attending to the needs of our most vulnerable families.

Community Health Partners offers the Healthy Families Program to parent(s) who are expecting a baby or have a newborn infant. Healthy Families is nationally accredited by Healthy Families America. It is a free, voluntary, culturally humble program that focuses on family strengths and healthy parent child interaction and bonding. The goals of the Healthy Families Program are safe and healthy children and families, empowered parents, and school ready children. Priority for service is given to single parents, first-time parents, and teen parents.

Eligibility:

  • Prenatal families or families with newborns may be eligible for HOPES services.
  • A Family Support Worker may work with a family until a child reaches five years of age or until the family no longer request services.
  • Reside in Fremont, Montgomery, and Page counties

Quitline Iowa is a free telephone service for Iowa residents trying to become tobacco free. Members receive special tools, research-based information, and a community of other individuals trying to become tobacco free. Services are individualized to meet specific needs of each person.

The quitline provides three different quit programs, designed to meet your style of communication, and the support you’re seeking as you quit tobacco. All quit programs will help you deal with the emotional, behavioral, and physical aspects that make quitting so hard.

The purpose of the Regional Genetics Consultation service is to provide genetic health care services and education for patients and families within the state of Iowa through statewide outreach services; in order to promote health, prevent disease, reduce the incidence of congenital disorders and improve outcomes for those with birth defects and genetic disorders.

Eligibility:

Clinic should be contacted to obtain description of exact eligibility requirements. In general, following documentation is needed: medical records from current doctors, records of related imaging studies, and records of laboratory studies.

Ruth Harbor is a Christ-centered home for young women who are alone and facing unplanned pregnancies. “Ruth” means compassion; “Harbor” means a place of refuge, safety, retreat, shelter.

Ruth Harbor is a resident home located in Des Moines and Carlisle. It provides young women who are alone and facing unplanned pregnancies a truly viable option — a safe harbor — by providing housing, education, counseling, health care, parenting training or adoption assistance, spiritual support and more for the duration of their pregnancies.

    • The Mother-Child programming includes a safe home in which to live, and many other supports such as professional counseling, coaching on parenting skills, and additional life skills that build off the relationship development, assistance in education/employment/volunteering, and medical care guidance.
  • Maternity Home
    • Ruth Harbor Maternity Home is a home for young women (up to age 23) facing an unplanned pregnancy.  Ruth Harbor provides a family-style home. Housing, food, and transportation are provided. Mothers are given the support needed to work and save for the future or pursue educational and career opportunities.

Designed for women up to age 23 with babies up to 12 months of age when entering.

Our Safe and Healthy Housing program is available for low-income families that live in the greater Des Moines Metro area and need repairs to their home to maintain safety for the resident(s).

You must own your home; they will not work with rentals or contract homes.
